This Art of Hosting (AoH) training will be led by three seasoned hosts who are stewards of the AoH global community. Each of them have over a decade of experience facilitating strategic work with groups and hosting conversations that help groups take their next steps together. Rooted in their commitment to their community and lessons they've learned from traveling around the world, this AoH is a chance for the host team to come home and share their learning about making strategic change in organizations and systems.
Phil Cass has recently transitioned out of his 16 year role as CEO of four affiliated not-for-profit health corporations (the Columbus Medical Association, Columbus Medical Association Foundation, Physicians Care Connection and Central Ohio Trauma System), a host/ facilitator/trainer and consultant, a part time college level instructor, a mentor, a constant advocate for community and a life-long student.
In his 33 years of work as a CEO he has been responsible for strategic direction, operations management, human resources management, policy development, government relations and community relations. As a college level instructor he has developed curriculum for and provided instruction in the area of leadership which is his passion and in strategic planning and community mental health. He has provided hosting/facilitation and training for numerous organizations locally and internationally and has served on many Boards of community organizations. He is a graduate of the first ever two year master class in Theory U and has applied Theory U to numerous stuck social problems.
For the past 16 years he has worked to develop a corporate culture of participatory leadership within the organizations he has recently been CEO of. This real world experience in developing a unique corporate culture serves to inform the hosting, facilitation, training and consulting he does with other organizations. He enjoys working with the executive leadership of organizations to support them in developing organizational cultures that help their organizations thrive and that also support their staffs to realize their highest possibilities.
Meditation, the use of intentional dialogue, leading strategic change initiatives and teaching are all areas of keen interest to him.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Kenyon College, a Master’s degree in Counseling and Guidance from Fairfield University and a Ph.D. in Counseling and Guidance from The Ohio State University.

Deb Helber is a host/facilitator and strategic planner who retired in 2004 from The Ohio State University Medical Center where she served as the Chief of Staff for Corporate Shared Services. She was also Administrator for Strategic Planning, Planning and Business Development, Market Research, Real Estate, Site Development, Regional Outreach, and Accreditation & Safety.
Since her retirement from Ohio State, Deb has found rewarding and impactful work with people that are focused on building stronger & healthier communities and organizations. Deb brings her expertise & interest in navigating complex organizations & systems into her work – helping others to discover how to optimally serve their clients, communities and organizations. She uses her skills around planning and designing, hosting/facilitating, and harvesting to bring multi-stakeholder groups together to work towards a shared purpose. Her work is focused on three levels: at a strategic level - discovering & envisioning what it is we want to be or do; at an operational level – planning & articulating how we become what we envision; and at a transformational level – supporting & coaching the organization through change – walking with them through the work.
With a core group of community leaders, she is part of a “community of practitioners” in Columbus, convening and hosting community conversations as a way to address the complex social issues that face many urban centers right now. She is also a Steward of the Art of Hosting. Deb is a co-founder and partner in Confluence Unlimited. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education and a Masters in Health Administration.

Tuesday Ryan-Hart is a host/facilitator who left the fields of traditional social service provision and academics to become a new kind of change-maker partnering with community builders around the world. Tuesday’s work in community is featured in the book Walk, Out, Walk On by Margaret Wheatley and Deborah Frieze, and she is known internationally for her strategic work with organizations and communities engaged in systemic change.

Susan Urano is the Executive Director of the Athens Foundation in Athens, Ohio. Susan has extensive community leadership experience with nearly 30 years in the nonprofit sector. She founded the first Leadership Athens County program, initiated Athens Professionals for Philanthropy to increase involvement of younger donors and the Women’s Fund to support the needs of women and girls.
Susan serves as a member of the Appalachia Ohio Funders Group, Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Council on Foundations and sits on the board of Philanthropy Ohio and the Appalachian Funders Network.
